The All Blacks Sevens are under investigation for having eight players on the field in the lead-up to a last gasp equalising try against Australia on Saturday in Sydney.

New Zealand secured a thrilling draw when Ardie Savea took an inside pass to cross on the stroke of fulltime.

But footage appeared to show New Zealand had an extra player on the field, with a wide-shot showing eight players spread out across the field in the build-up to the final try.

The result, which saw the All Blacks top pool A on point difference, means Australia faces England in the quarter-finals while New Zealand play the USA.

It is not known whether the All Blacks could be stripped of points.

The Australians are playing down the controversy, with an official saying the team is happy to face England, according to a News Limited report.
