Jones knocks out fan in challenge worth $132K

Boxing great Roy Jones Jnr has come under fire after knocking out a fan in a challenge worth $132,000.

Jones, who was regarded as the world’s best pound-for-pound fighter earlier in his career, headlined the event where a fan was given the chance to fight the four-division world champion and win the cash prize if they were to beat the 47-year-old.

Fans voted for Vyron Phillips, a 33-year-old MMA fighter with a background in boxing, but it was quickly apparent he was out of his depth against Jones with the referee stopping the fight in the second round.

Professional wrestlers Kurt Angle and Rey Mysterio also fought in the pay-per-view event for urshow.tv in Arizona.

Jones shrugged off criticism for fighting an amateur fan and refused to confirm whether he would call time on his 26-year professional career.

"I don't care what they think, I don't have time to give to critics," he said after beating Phillips.

"There's nothing official. I may hang it up, I'm going to see how I feel," the 47-year-old added.

The future hall of famer did pay credit to Phillips for stepping in to the ring.

"I wouldn't challenge Michael Jordan in 1-1 for $100,000. That guy (Phillips) has an amazing heart to just try the feat. He went out and challenged the best. That's a lot of heart."

Phillips echoed the sentiments of many fight fans and said he hoped Jones would hang up his gloves.

"I'd like to see Roy go away from this. Maybe coach. I don't want to see him get hurt," he said.

Jones, who was given Russian citizenship last year, has a 62-9 record as a professional but was knocked out by Welshman Enzo Maccarinelli in his last fight in Russia in December.

The 47-year-old lit up the boxing world with his speed and athleticism and became the first fighter in 106 years to win both a heavyweight world title having held the middleweight crown in 2003.
