A record 2667 doping tests took place at the Winter Games in Sochi, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) said on Tuesday.

From the opening of the Olympic village on January 30 to the last day of competition on February 23, there were 2190 urine tests and 477 blood tests.

Of the checks made, 1421 were done before competition began - an increase of 60 per cent compared to the Vancouver Winter Games of 2010. In Canada, there were a total of 2149 doping tests.

All samples taken have been frozen and the IOC says they will be stored for 10 years - longer than the previous eight years - to enable future testing should new technology become available.

In Sochi, there were six positive tests including German biathlete Evi Sachenbacher-Stehle.
