Police issue drone warning at Games

Queensland police have issued a warning after four separate incidents of drone use inside areas restricted for the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games on Sunday.

One man has been referred to the Civil Aviation Safety Authority for operating a drone at Southport and police warn offenders could face significant penalties, up to a fine of $250,000, for breaching restricted airspace.

"The message from police is clear: the use of drones in the restricted airspace around venues will not be tolerated," Assistant Commissioner Peter Crawford said.

Police have set up restricted airspace zones at all Commonwealth Games venues, with most preventing the use of unauthorised aircraft such as drones within two kilometres.

Special techniques such as anti-drone guns have been used by police for the Games to enforce the no-fly zones.

"If you're not sure whether your flight plan is within safe airspace, then we urge you to leave your drone at home," Mr Crawford said.
