Parko happy with Fanning surf break call

Mick Fanning's decision to take a break from competitive surfing has left fellow Australian Joel Parkinson with mixed feelings.

Fanning announced last week he would only compete in select events in this year's World Surf League after an emotional 2015 when he narrowly missed out on a fourth world title despite a shark attack during competition in South Africa, the death of his older brother and a marriage breakdown.

Parkinson says he couldn't be happier for his friend to be taking a break for his own sake but admits it will leave a hole on this year's tour.

"I'm so glad he's taking a break but, for every surf fan out there that doesn't get to see the best of Mick Fanning, it's a bit of a sad thing," the 2012 world champion told ABC Gold Coast.

"It's great for him.

"He had a pretty intense - probably 18 months - so it's really good he can take some time off and recharge his batteries."

Fanning will line up with Parkinson at the season-opening Quiksilver Pro on the Gold Coast, which is scheduled to get under way next week.

Parkinson himself is hoping for an improved 2016 after a tough year when he finished 13th on the tour rankings without reaching a single semi-final.

"I'm expecting a completely different year," Parkinson said.

"A year that I could definitely turn last year up on its head and hopefully have a lot better year."
