Own goal a real bummer for keeper

Talk about a bummer of a goal.

A US ice hockey keeper was left cursing his misfortune after scoring an own goal in the most comical fashion this week following.

Playing in the second tier American Hockey League, Lake Erie Monsters goalie Calvin Pickard thought his goal was safe after watching a shot from Grand Rappids Griffins rival Ryan Sproul spray wide.

But following a freakish set of rebounds, the puck cannoned off the back glass and then into his backside, before sliding over the goal line.

The goal gave the Griffins a 4-0 lead and while it wasn't the strike Sproul would have envisioned, it ultimately proved vital as his team held on for a 5-3 victory.

As for Pickard he was still scratching his, er head, after the match at his misfortune.
