One spectator critical and 11 injured after being burned at Northern Territory drag racing competition

One person is in a critical condition and several others have been injured after a flash fire during a drag racing event in Alice Springs.

12 spectators were burned from a competition car at the Red CentreNATS racing event on Sunday.

It is believed the spectators involved were sprayed with fuel, leaving one person in a critical condition and 11 others in a serious but stable condition.

"This is a distressing situation, however all patients are receiving the care they need," a spokesperson said in a statement.

Organisers cancelled the event following the fire, which police are now investigating.
