World's saddest medallist wins gold in Rio

A North Korean gymnast has been dubbed the "the saddest gold medallist" after looking utterly depressed atop the podium in Rio.

Russian silver medallist Denis Albyazin and Japanese bronze medallist Kenzo Shirai couldn't contain their jubilation, but Ri Se-Gwang remained emotionless.

Despite his ambivalent demeanour, Ri said winning the gold medal was the greatest moment of his life.

"This gold medal is a joy for my country and I think it will bring a sense of victory and courage to the people of my country," Ri told reporters.

"I was filled with a lot of emotions and joy because I thought I was able to bring a sense of victory and glory to our leader."

Ri performed a military salute as the North Korean flag was raised during the medal ceremony.

The 31-year-old double world champion became only the second man from North Korea to win an Olympic gold medal in gymnastics, following the success of Pae Gil-Su at the 1992 Barcelona Games.

North Korean weightlifter Kim Kuk Hyang had a similar disenchanted outlook at the podium where she received a silver medal.

It's been speculated that North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un has demanded five gold medals from the Rio game, the Daily Star reports.
