Tokyo Olympics 2021: Ash Barty and Storm Sanders out of women's doubles tournament

Ash Barty has one last chance to win a medal at the Tokyo Olympics after blowing a handy lead to lose her doubles match with Storm Sanders today.

The Australian duo were in a good spot in their quarter-final against Czech pair Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova, claiming the first set and having multiple break points in the second that they failed to capitalise on before the contest was levelled at a set each.

But the Aussies were pipped in the super tiebreaker to miss a golden opportunity to eliminate the top seeds and earn a semi-final berth, losing 3-6 6-4 (10-7).

Barty crashed out in the first round of the women's singles tournament in a shock straight-sets defeat to Spain's world No.48 Sara Sorribes Tormo.

It was a crushing result for the world No.1 and a big letdown only a fortnight after winning the Wimbledon crown.

Barty racked up a staggering 55 unforced errors and landed just over half her first serves in play.

But Barty's got one last chance for an Olympic medal in Tokyo, teaming up with John Peers in the mixed doubles, with their first-round match later tonight.

The pair partnered for runs to the quarter-finals at Wimbledon in 2013 and the US Open in 2014.

Australia's other two representatives in the women's doubles, Sam Stosur and Ellen Perez, will compete in their quarter-final against Swiss duo Belinda Bencic and Viktorija Golubic later today.
