Stosur's Olympic singles run ends

Samantha Stosur isn't ruling out a fifth Olympics tennis campaign despite her Rio Games ending in disappointing fashion with a straight sets loss to Germany's Angelique Kerber.

The last Australian remaining in the singles, Stosur's medal plans came to a crashing end in the third round, losing 6-0 7-5 to the world No.2.

After a forgettable opening set she rallied to break Kerber and level at 5-5 in the second only for the 2016 Australian Open champion to break straight back before serving out the match.

"Obviously the first set really got away from me; I think four games were deuce but I wasn't able to make any inroads and I felt I was always playing catch-up," Stosur said.

"In the second I started to get myself into the match and that 5-4 game was huge but you can't have a game like that and then let them off again by losing serve especially when they're a quality player like she is."

It bettered her previous best Olympics showing back in 2008 by one round and Stosur wasn't ruling out another Games in Tokyo in four years time, when she will be 36.

"I can't say I'm expecting to be in Tokyo but if I can, and I can still stay healthy and do what I'm doing then I don't see why not," said the world No.17.

Stosur will partner John Peers against fourth-seeded Indian combination Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna in the opening round of the mixed doubles.
