Sonny Bill said time was always against Hayne

Jarryd Hayne may not have made it to Rio, but his name certainly has.

After giving up on his dream of representing Fiji in Sevens rugby at the Olympics, the melodrama that is Hayne took a fresh turn on Wednesday when the multi-sport star returned to the NRL and signed a $2.4million deal with the Gold Coast Titans.

The Hayne Plane’s Olympic dreams never really took off, but that didn’t stop a reporter from asking fellow code-hopper Sonny Bill Williams about Hayne’s predicament.

Williams, who has mixed professional boxing, rugby league and 15-a-side rugby into his sporting life, said Hayne simply didn’t have enough time to make the transition to Sevens rugby.

‘’For myself coming in here this year I always knew it was going to be tough. It has been really hard,’’ the All Blacks star said.

‘’It is a totally different game to 15s (rugby), Hayne just needed time.’’

Williams said the fact Hayne and a host of others players failed in bids to play in Rio further justified his approach to the Olympics.

‘’There have been a lot of 15s players that have tried to make Sevens teams. A lot of them haven’t made it because it is a totally different game.

‘’That’s why I am thankful. We sussed out a plan to put myself forward for the whole year to try and crack it.’’

Willliams and the New Zealand Sevens team are gold medal hopes.
