Protesters swarm Rio's Copacabana Beach days before Olympics

Powered by

Thousands of protesters have taken to Rio's Copacabana Beach to rally against suspended Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, days before the city is due to host the Olympics.

Multiple rallies took place on the beach's main promenade, including one by members of the police force.

The beach is a famous tourist attraction and the protests occurred in front of Olympic visitors.

Ms Rousseff was suspended from office in May for up to six months to face an impeachment trial, on charges that she broke accounting rules.

Vice President Michel Temer is serving as Acting President of Brazil.

Ms Rousseff has said her impeachment is illegal and branded it a "coup".

Another key concern in Rio ahead of the Olympics is crime, with gangs targeting gridlocked traffic on the main road to the Olympics site.

Traffic has queued through tunnels, where thieves have coordinated robberies and police have struggled to respond.
