Pentathlete Esposito eyes Oly best

Chloe Esposito moved to Hungary two years ago to become the best modern pentathlete she can be.

The 24-year-old finished seventh in London and third in the 2015 World Cup, and she's in with a shout in Rio.

"I definitely want to get up a few places better," Esposito said after arriving in Rio.

"(But) there's a lot of variables."

Those variables are five different sports - running, swimming, shooting, horse-riding and fencing - combined into one event.

The fencing inspired Esposito's move to overseas.

"Before London I was living in Australia and it's just so far from competition," she said.

"Also after London I really needed to improve my fencing so that's another reason why we moved to Budapest, because the fencing is really, really strong there."

Three months ago Chloe and her brother Max, who is competing in the men's modern pentathlon even, moved to a high altitude camp in Mexico to prepare for Rio.

"It's less oxygen, so when you come back down to sea level, it's jut a lot easier to breathe and run and swim faster," Chloe Esposito said.

Chloe said she would not have been able to get her results without dad Peter, their coach and himself an Olympic modern pentathlete for Australia in 1984.

Max, 19, is a bit further back in the pack than his sister but he did finish sixth in a 2015 Champion of Champions event.

"I'm not going to put too much pressure on myself for the Games," Max said.

"I'm the youngest athlete."

Max says he was inspired to chase an Olympic dream after watching his sister.

"I went to London to watch Chloe and it was great. I loved it," he said.

The modern pentathlon starts with the opening fencing round on Thursday.
