'Amazing opportunity': Jess Fox gifted torch honour ahead of rare Olympic Games treble attempt

Having won gold in Tokyo in front of tiny crowds with little to no family support, Jessica Fox is hungrier than ever to go back-to-back at Paris 2024.

That France is her country of birth, and remains home to several extended relatives, just makes it all the more sweet a return.

"Paris symbolises for me just an amazing opportunity to celebrate my identity in a way, my French heritage, that connection that I have there," Fox told Nine's Today.

"Having family in France, feeling that connection, knowing some will be in the crowd, especially after Tokyo.

"We missed the energy and the atmosphere and having friends and family there – makes it extra special."

Now 30, Paris will be Fox's fourth Games, having debuted in London a bright-eyed and bushy-tailed 18-year-old.

Fox will be looking to join a list of Aussie stars to achieve the rare feat of winning three gold medals at the one Games, with Canoe Cross a new event featured in the slalom schedule in Paris.

Eight swimmers have already achieved the feat including returning champions Emma McKeon and Kaylee McKeown, who stepped on the podium on multiple occasions in Tokyo. Shane Gould and Betty Cuthbert are the only other two Aussies to be named on the list.

Fox is a prospect to achieve the same run as Gould, who won three gold medals without the assistance of a relay achievement.

Sister Noemie will join Fox in Paris – like she has in London, Rio and Tokyo – only this time she'll also be a competitor.

Noemie confirmed there will be no favours performed on the course for her sister.

"You're not just going to let your sister go through. 'like, oh just go in front of me.' There will be nothing like that," Noemie told 9News.

"The goal is for us to both get through as far as we can but it is what it is. It's definitely more of a contact sport than we are used to."

The pair are coached by their mum Myriam, who won bronze for France in the K1 class at the Atlanta Games in 1996.

Dad Richard also competed for the United Kingdom, and finished fourth in K1 in Barcelona.

Fox said having such a tightknit family and support group "makes the tougher days a lot easier".

"(Family) is a constant in my life – my sister is my training partner and teammate as well and competitor," she explained.

"Mum is our coach ... she has been such a big inspiration and driver as well. Dad, obviously, has played a huge role as well.

"Having their support means the world to me."

Fox ticked off another career highlight this week in Paris, awarded the honour of joining the torch relay.

Fellow Tokyo gold medalists Ricarda Funk, Emilie Fer, Ben Isavsek, and Jiri Prskavec accompanied Fox in the raft for the torch relay as family and friends watched on.

"It's an amazing opportunity to be able to be part of the torch relay," Fox told 9News.

"To sit in the raft and go down was a bit different. Normally people are on the land but we got to take it down the rapids and it survived which is great."

The Sydney-sider won the golden treble at the World Cup in Krakow earlier this year, becoming the first athlete to win three individual gold medals in a single weekend.

"I've had really good form and some great races at the World Cup event," she said.

"I think if I can sit on that start line knowing that I've done everything, I can feel pretty proud and confident."
