Aussie cyclist Grace Brown reveals 'heartbreak' in emotional message after teammate Luke Plapp's horror crash

Champion cyclist Grace Brown has issued an emotional message following teammate Luke Plapp's horror crash over the weekend.

Brown – who braved miserable conditions and won the women's road time trial on Saturday, bringing home Australia's first Paris 2024 gold medal in the process – rushed to Plapp's side in hospital mere hours after her stunning victory.

"It was heartbreaking to get news of Plappy's crash after my race on Saturday," Brown, 32, wrote on her Instagram story on Monday evening alongside a photo of the pair.

"This photo pretty much sums up the highs and lows of cycling," Brown continued in her message to her 18,200 followers.

"What a champ he is to still be happy for me despite his own dreams being taken away this time."

In the photo, originally shared by Plapp to his own Instagram page overnight, Brown can be seen holding up her gold medal next to a grinning Plapp, who is wearing a hospital gown and standing up with his IV drip pole for support.

"Special visit at the hospital this morning from the OLYMPIC CHAMP," Plapp, 23, wrote to his 31,200 followers.

"Made my day yesterday and today! What an absolute superstar".

On Sunday, Plapp was forced to undergo abdominal surgery after crashing out of the men's road time trial.

He'd made a strong start to the race – Plapp notably set the fourth-fastest time at the 13.1km mark – but he failed to finish after crashing at the next checkpoint.

A statement released by the Australian Olympic Committee on Sunday morning said Plapp was "in a stable condition in hospital awaiting the results of scans".

The statement said his parents and an Australian team doctor were with him, and more information would be released as it becomes available.

Norweigan Soren Waerenskjold also failed to finish the men's time trial, with the pouring rain transforming what was meant to be a picturesque course through the streets of Paris into a treacherous circuit.

In the women's time trial earlier, which saw Brown emerge victorious, multiple riders crashed into the asphalt, including Chloé Dygert, who was the gold medal favourite.
