'Wished I could do more': Aussie runner Ellie Beer apologises in teary interview

An emotional Ellie Beer has apologised to Australia after falling short of the women's 400m semi-finals in an emotional interview.

Finishing fourth in her heat with a time of 51.65 seconds, the Australian runner shared her disappointment in the moments following the race.

"I wish I could do more ... Sorry I didn't make the semi but it has been an unreal experience," she told Nine's Tony Jones.

The 21-year-old said she gave the race her all and would return home with her head held high.

"I was really trying to make the semi-final but I have qualified for my second Olympics and I wished I could do more," Beer said.

"But I should be really happy."

The two-time Olympian thanked the organisers, family and team members for their support throughout the Games.

She celebrated a personal best time and expressed her excitement in returning to training.

"I walk home from my second Olympics and there have been so many learning curves here but I am hungry for more now," she said.

"I am honestly looking forward to giving my mum, dad and coach a hug right now.

"I'm coming home with a PB and good vibe and it's been awesome in Paris."
