A bushfire has damaged part of the mountain bike course in Rio, but the competition will go ahead on schedule.

The fire started behind the shooting venue at the Deodoro complex in the city's northwest on Monday night.

Fanned by strong winds it caused damage to parts of the cross country mountain bike course to be used from Saturday, including signage and other infrastructure.

Rio 2016 communications director Mario Andrada says organisers are waiting on a full assessment of the damage and the cause of the fire is still to be determined.

But he says teams are already in the area making repairs.

An official inspection will be conducted on Tuesday afternoon with the course to be open to training from Wednesday.

The Deodoro complex has been plagued with problems during the Games.

On the first day of competition a bullet tore through the press tent at the equestrian centre with another bullet found in the area several days later.

Not long after a bus carrying media representatives was hit by stones, with two of its windows broken in an attack some on board remain convinced was gunfire.
