Aussies taken off standby for Rio Olympics

Some Australian gymnasts have been taken off standby for a late call-up to the Rio Olympics.

Australia's women's artistic gymnastics team had held some hope of replacing Russian competitors at the Rio Games starting next Thursday.

But the international gymnastics federation has now cleared Russia's gym team to compete.

"Gymnastics has cleared all the Russians to compete, so we won't be able to get an artistic team," Australian Olympic team chef de mission Kitty Chiller said on Thursday.

More than 100 Russian athletes from what was originally a 387-strong team have been barred from competing in Rio by international sports federations in the wake of Russia's doping scandal.
