Schoolchildren from Japan will feature in the Olympic Games closing ceremony, to say thanks to the world for the help the country received after the devastating 2011 earthquake.

Tokyo will host the Games in 2020 and will present a short artistic segment at the Maracana Stadium on Sunday after receiving the Olympic flag.

Officials have declined to reveal full details of their presentation, which will last for less than 10 minutes, but say it will serve as a thank you to the world for the help it received five years ago.

The earthquake and tsunami that followed claimed almost 16,000 lives and left a damage bill of up to $US35 billion ($A45.53 billion).

Tokyo 2020 chief executive Toshiro Muto said the presentation would be seen as an opportunity to both present Japan's vision for the next Olympics and to look back on what happened in 2011.

"At that time there was so much assistance given from the world," he told reporters on Saturday.

"We'd like to take this opportunity to express our appreciation."

He said the students taking part in the ceremony had been drawn from elementary and high schools in the disaster-affected areas.
