How judo works at the Olympics

HOW JUDO WORKS AT THE OLYMPICS:

* Judo players - or judoka - compete on a mat, or tatami, measuring 14m x 14m. However, matches take place in the centre of the tatami in an area usually measuring 8m x 8m

* Judoka wear uniforms called judogi, featuring loose-fitting pants, jackets and a belt tied at the waist

* There are seven weight divisions for both men and women - from less than 60kg to more than 100kg class for men, and less than 48kg to more than 78kg for women

* Each class is split into two draws and compete in a knockout format

* The two finalists compete for gold and silver. Those who lost to the finalists will play off for bronze, with two medals awarded

* Each match lasts five minutes

* The objective is to score points by throwing your opponent to the floor, or through holds

* A bout can be won if a player successfully performs an `Ippon' by throwing their opponent on their back with force, speed and control.
