Fresh from securing a place in the quarter-finals, the Hockeyroos will be keen to lock down third spot in Pool B when they face Japan in their last game before the knockout phase of the Rio Olympics.

The prize for a victory over world No.10 Japan at the Olympic Hockey Centre in Deodoro on Saturday will be avoiding a quarter-final against the top-ranked Netherlands who are three points clear in Pool A.

The Dutch lead their pool from New Zealand and Germany - who they play on Sunday, the reigning two-time Olympic women's hockey champions all but assured of top spot regardless of the result.

Australia moved three points clear of world No.2 Argentina when they beat them 1-0 in their Pool B clash on Thursday night.

"We want to get a little bit better each time we're out on the pitch ... hopefully we can do that against Japan," said Australian goalkeeper Rachael Lynch.

Argentina are expected to dispatch world No.13 India on Saturday and should the Hockeyroos slip up, the South Americans could jump above the Australians.

A Hockeyroos' victory would secure third place in their pool and a knockout clash with the Pool A runners-up, either world No.9 Germany or No.4 New Zealand.

The Kiwis produced an outstanding display on Friday to draw 1-1 with the Netherlands and face world No.6 China on Saturday night.
