Historic games return for Sydney Olympian

Sydney Olympic medallist Michellie Jones will return to games competition in Rio de Janeiro, guiding a visually impaired athlete in the Paralympics triathlon.

Jones won silver in the Sydney triathlon event in 2000 and will guide Katie Kelly in the first ever Olympic Paratriathlon.

Kelly, who has a degenerative disease that causes blindness and hearing loss, said she was excited to complete the race beside an Olympic medallist.

Triathlon debuted in the Sydney Olympics and Jones said she was proud to be a part of another piece of Olympic history with Kelly.

"Having the opportunity to act as the guide for Katie Kelly in the first ever paratriathlon event is not only historic but also humbling and inspirational," Jones said.

"They all have amazing stories and have overcome many obstacles and I'm truly blessed to be a part of the journey."

A total of six Australia athletes will compete in the event with Bill Chaffey (QLD), Nic Beveridge (ACT)and Brant Garvey (WA) representing the men.

Kelly (ACT), Kate Doughty (VIC) and Claire McLean (WA) will compete in the women's category.
