The US men’s basketball team won’t be bunking down in the same ramshackle abodes afforded the Australian Olympic athletes in Rio.

As they do, and as you would expect from a bunch of athletes on contracts in the vicinity of US$100million, the US men are staying on the luxury cruise ship ‘’Silver Cloud’’ which will be anchored just off Rio. Villas on the ship cost more than $20,000 a week.

That money won’t bother the likes of Kevin Durant and Carmelo Anthony, who between them have earned more than US$250million – a figure not including endorsements.

Since the introduction of the ‘’Dream Team’’ concept for the 1992 Barcelona Games, the US men’s team have made a habit of not staying in the village with the other athletes. Five-star hotels are their usual choice, but this time they have opted for a nautical theme.

As is the case with luxury cruise liners, the players won’t have to go far if looking for some after-hours entertainment.

So, while most of other athletes are making do in the village, the Americans will be living the dream when they arrive in Rio in the coming days.

As they say in the classics, ‘’If you’ve got it, flaunt it.’’
