Brit sets breaststroke world record

Great Britain swimmer Adam Peaty didn't know what the crowd were cheering for.

Then he realised he'd set a world record.

Peaty produced the first swimming world record at the Rio Olympic Games on Saturday, in the men's 100m breaststroke.

He did it in a heat. And he didn't know.

"Going down that first 50, I knew it was fast and I know I turned fast," Peaty said.

"But it wasn't until 25 metres to go and the crowd started giving roars and I thought: there are no Brazilians in this lane, so they have got to be shouting for something."

Peaty, who clocked 57.55 seconds, bettering his previous world-best mark of 57.92s set last year, was surprised at his feat.

"I wasn't even pumped up in the call room," he said.

"But as soon as I walked in, it was either fight or flight and I chose to actually get something out of it. You can either be shy of the arena or take advantage of it."
