Brazil's inrerim leader to skip closing

Brazilian interim President Michel Temer, who was roundly booed at the opening ceremony of the Rio Olympics, has decided not to attend the closing, reports say.

The news wire Agencia Brasil cited sources in the presidential palace as saying that Temer had made the decision after consultations with the foreign ministry.

By contrast, Japanese Premier Shinzo Abe will be attending the closing ceremony on Sunday, given that Tokyo was chosen as the venue of the 2020 Olympics.

Temer, the country's vice president, was made interim president for 180 days after Dilma Rousseff was suspended in May, pending possible impeachment proceedings on charges of manipulating government accounts to obscure the country's economic situation.

A vote on an impeachment trial is to take place in early September, and if it is approved, then Temer would stand to remain in office until elections scheduled for 2018.

At the August 5 opening ceremony in Maracana Stadium, Temer was loudly booed at the moment that he officially declared the games open. The booing was quickly drowned out by music.
