Aussie judo hopes fade in Rio

Australia has only a few remaining chances in judo at the Rio Olympics after Victorian Jake Bensted lost his second match of the competition.

The Commonwealth Games bronze medallist survived his first bout against Andrew Thomas Mlugu of the United Republic of Tanzania by ippon - a winning move in judo - in the men's 73kg.

But he lost in the round of 16 to Azerbaijan's Rustam Orujov.

He was the first Australian to advance past the first round at this Games, with Chloe Rayner and brothers Joshua and Nathan Katz eliminated on the first two days of competition.

Three are yet to fight, beginning with Katharina Haecker (women's 63kg) and Eoin Coughlan (men's 81kg) on Tuesday and ending with Miranda Giambelli (women 78kg) on Thursday.
