Aust loses in beach volleyball quarters

Australian beach volleyballers Louise Bawden and Taliqua Clancy are saying goodbye to Rio after losing to three-time gold medallist Kerri Walsh Jennings and her playing partner April Ross.

Walsh Jennings and Ross defeated the Australian pair 21-14 and 21-16 in their quarter-final on Monday morning.

"I think we prepared well and we had a good game plan. I think execution was just a little bit off, they put us under a fair amount of pressure," Bawden said.

"I know there's things we could have done a bit better, just to give us more of an attacking edge against those guys, which is where you have to be if you want to beat them."

The Australians won all three of their group games and their round-of-16 game to advance to the last eight.

"It doesn't matter who's on the other side of the court, I know that `T' and I are one of the strongest teams in the world and on our day we can beat anyone," Bawden said.

"So credit to the Americans and we wish them well."

Walsh Jennings is through to the semi-finals for the fourth straight time, having claimed gold in Athens, Beijing and London.
