Australian men’s quad sculls rowing crew win silver medal in Rio
The Australian men’s quadruple sculls rowing crew has won an Olympic silver medal in a thrilling final in Rio.
The crew of Karsten Forsterling, Sasha Belonogoff, Cameron Girdlestone and James McRae finished in second behind the defending gold medallists Germany at the Lagoa Stadium.
The Germans raced out to a commanding lead by the mid-point of the race, but were nearly hauled in by the Australians, who had entered the final as favourites for gold.
The Estonian boat finished third.
The Australian men's coxless pair of Spencer Turrin and Alex Lloyd were hoping to medal in their final today, but faded late to miss the places.
As was widely expected, the reigning Olympic champion Kiwi pair of Hamish Bond and Eric Murray blitzed the field to win by a huge margin.
Earlier, the Aussie men's fours crew won their semi-final to book a place in the final on Saturday morning (AEST).
Rio awoke to sunshine on day six of competition, after a wet and windy few days.
Bad weather had hampered a number of events across week one of the Rio Games including tennis, beach volleyball, sailing, canoe slalom, and in particular rowing, which was cancelled for two days straight.
