A guide to hockey at the Olympics

HOW HOCKEY WORKS AT THE OLYMPICS:

* There are 12 teams in the men's and women's competitions, with teams split into two pools of six for the preliminary rounds

* The Australian women (World No. 3) will compete in Pool B against Argentina (2), Great Britain (6), USA (7), Japan (10) and India (13)

* Australia's men (World No. 1), compete in pool A against New Zealand (8) and Great Britain (4), Belgium (5), Spain (11) and the hosts, Brazil (32)

* The top four from each of the two pools will progress to the knockout rounds, starting with the quarter-finals

* Rio is the first Olympics to feature this new format.
