Nunes becomes first openly-gay UFC champion

Amanda Nunes would not be denied.

She crushed defending bantamweight champion Miesha Tate in one of the bloodiest and quickest fights on the UFC 200 fightcard.

With the submission win she became both the first Brazilian woman as well as the first openly-gay fighter to claim a UFC crown.

"Ten years of my life working hard for this moment," an overjoyed Nunes said in the ring after the fight. "I feel amazing."

In the press conference after the fight she said she was "very happy in my life" and it felt "amazing" to be the first openly-gay champion.

She also spoke how important her partner Nina Ansaroff, a fellow UFC fighter, was and how she depended on her support.

"Nina is the best partner I ever had in my life," a teary-eyed Nunes said.

"It means everything to me, this girl she helped me with everything."

The itself fight was quick and brutal.

It was barely a minute old before the Brazilian caught Tate with a fierce right hand, rocking the American.

Like a shark smelling blood in the water she then laid into Tate who struggled to defend herself against the flurry of blows.

Once beyond Tate's guard, Nunes quickly got her opponent in a rear-naked choke and finished the fight.

It was a near-flawless performance by the fighter who not many people gave a chance before the fight.



"I knew the whole time (while training for the fight) I had everything to beat Miesha," she said.

"I just had to be patient, take my time and I did it tonight."
