Wigan's woes worsen in loss to Wakefield

Wigan have ended an embarrassing week with a third straight comprehensive defeat in the English Super League.

Reeling from Joel Tomkins' off-field antics which earned the dual-code international a four-week ban and a GBP10,000 ($A17,605) fine, the Warriors produced a limp display to go down 32-16 to Wakefield Trinity.

Winger Ben Jones-Bishop scored two of Wakefield's five tries as Wakefield leapfrogged champions Leeds into sixth place, while Wigan lost more ground on leaders St Helens.

In some good news for Wigan, coach Shaun Wane handed a debut to 20-year-old Craig Mullen following the late withdrawal of winger Liam Marshall due to illness and he emerged with credit after being constantly put under pressure.

Wakefield's starting prop David Fifita set a superb platform with a series of powerful runs in the first quarter.

Trinity opened the scoring on seven minutes when former Wigan halfback Ryan Hampshire and full-back Max Jowitt worked the ball out wide for Jones-Bishop to touch down.

Midway through the second half, Jones-Bishop closed out the game, intercepting a pass and sprinting 90 metres for his second try.
