Former Raiders and NSW prop Brett White has been hailed as a hero after saving a woman from a vicious attack on the Gold Coast on Tuesday night.

White recently moved to Surfers Paradise to join the Titans coaching staff but any hopes of a quiet lifestyle change were dashed after an horrific incident.

A bystander called Wide World of Sports to report White's brave deed and the former star forward was reluctant to say too much about the incident.

"I just did what I think any bloke would do in that situation," White said.

"It was around midnight and I heard a car doing burnouts, then I heard a woman screaming.

"I could see out the window a bloke was punching her, pulling her hair and kicking her in the head so I ran out and told the missus to call the cops.

"I came in behind him, put him in a choker hold and pinned him down for about five minutes until the cops arrived.

"They knew the bloke - it obviously wasn't his first offence - and they took him away and the poor woman went to hospital in an ambulance."

But what worried White was what detectives told him when they arrived.

"They said they had it all on CCTV footage and the guy had history but added it's very tough to prosecute if the victim doesn't lodge a complaint," White said.

"One of my best mates lost his sister to domestic violence - she was murdered by her partner - so I just hope the justice system can do something about this."

The witness, who declined to be named, praised White's actions.

"The guy was really doing her over," he said.

"If this guy hadn't have come up, I hate to think what would have happened."
