Nine commentator Phil Gould pours playful scorn on wingers during Roosters v Broncos NRL match

We’ve all heard the joke that ''wingers are the one’s who hang around football players'', but this amusing oratory from Phil Gould has surely taken the esteem in which the men in the No.2 and No.5 jerseys are held to a new low.

To be honest, the mix up between Roosters wingers Shaun Kenny-Dowall and Daniel Tupou wasn’t pretty and did result in the opposition Broncos scoring a few minutes later, but Gould’s amusing response will have had the likes of Wendell Sailor, Eric Grothe and Lote Tuqiri yelling at the TV.

''Any time you get a winger throwing a pass to a winger you are in real trouble,’’ Gould started.

''Doesn’t matter what day of the week, what time of day, what part of the game.’’

Wally Lewis, who definitely wasn’t a winger during his brilliant playin career, fuelled the flames with ''I think it was banned at one time in the game Gus, wasn’t it?’’

That was all Gould needed.

''Never the two should meet, winger should never talk to winger let alone pass the ball,’’ he said.

''I used to tell the wingers training was on different days, I didn’t want them turning up on the same day.’’
