State of Origin pauses for a minute in memory of fallen police officer Brett Forte
State of Origin has paid tribute to Queensland police officer Brett Forte with a moment's silence before Game 1. Snr Cst. Forte was killed by career criminal Rick Maddison in the Lockyer Valley on Monday afternoon.
Tributes have poured in for the officer over the past two days since the incident, and rugby league chose to honour the Senior Constable in its biggest night.
The crowd stood in silence for a minute after the singing of the national anthem.
Although anticipation for the opening moments for the match, there was a respectful delay to the on-field proceedings.
The loss of a fellow Queenslander made it a particularly poignant moment after a difficult two days. Tributes have flowed for the slain officer, who has been labelled a hero and a "brave young man, a fantastic police officer."
Snr Cst. Forte was shot dead during a traffic stop, after approaching Maddison down a dirt road towards a dead-end.
Forte had suffered a critical gunshot wound and could not be revived. His death ended a tense and tragic siege, with Madison was shot dead on Tuesday afternoon.
