Mark Geyer and Wally Lewis go head-to-head

Blues firebrand Mark Geyer and Wally Lewis staged the most dramatic piece of theatre in State of Origin history.

As rain beat down on the Sydney Football Stadium late in the opening half of Game 2 of the series, Geyer became involved in a wild brawl that erupted close to the Queensland line. Referee David Manson appeared to restore order as the half ended, however Geyer and Maroons skipper Wally Lewis snarled and shoved and verballed one another and another full-scale eruption appeared inevitable.

The game ended sensationally after a cut-out pass by Ricky Stuart resulted in a try to centre Mark McGaw in the corner, levelling the scores at 12-all. It left Michael O’Connor with a conversion from touch to win the game. In driving rain, O’Connor nailed the kick to hand the Blues one of their most famous victories.
