Peter Sterling says Dane Gagai in danger of losing starting spot in Rabbitohs' logjam

League great Peter Sterling has suggested that Dane Gagai could be a victim of a Wayne Bennett reshuffle in Round 8 as the Rabbitohs look to bounce back from a disappointing loss.

Bennett's South Sydney side currently sits ninth on the NRL ladder with a mediocre 3-4 record seven rounds into the season following their 20-12 defeat at the hands of the Penrith Panthers.

According to Sterling, one of Bennett's biggest issues is solving the logjam in the Rabbitohs' star-studded backline, with the return of James Roberts complicating things even more.

Roberts came off the bench in place of Gagai against the Panthers, and Sterling suggested that the Maroons veteran could now be in danger of losing his starting spot.

"I'm wondering what's going to happen with regards to fitting all of their backline members in now," he told Wide World of Sports' Sterlo's Wrap.

"It's very rare to see a State of Origin winger get replaced, and that's what we saw with Dane Gagai.

"James Roberts is available again, so what's going to happen there? Campbell Graham I think goes out onto the wing, so maybe Dane Gagai is in some trouble this weekend.

"I don't know what the selection process will be, whether Roberts will go to the bench again.

"I thought he might come on and buzz around the middle and take advantage of some fatigued forwards."

Despite the indifferent form of Bennett's side, Sterling said the blame shouldn't be laid at the foot of Blues star Cameron Murray.

"I haven't been disappointed with what I've seen from Cameron Murray," he said.

"He's just a product of the fact that South Sydney are coming up with too much lost ball and too many incomplete sets for Cameron Murray to do his stuff.

"I don't think they're too far away, I just thought this was a really poor performance against a good side.

"I'm keen to see what the selection process will be in regards to their outside backs this week."
