The Mole's Pacific Championships final player ratings: Mitchell Moses' 'strangely quiet' game in Kangaroos victory

Australia held off a plucky Tongan side to clinch the Pacific Cup title with a 20-14 win at CommBank Stadium on Sunday.

Among the stars were Tom Dearden, Tom Trbojevic, Lehi Hopoate and Eliesa Katoa.

Here's who fired and who flopped in the closely contested Test match.

Australia

1. Dylan Edwards

Was kept fairly well contained by the Tongan chase team but safe as always in the last line of defence.

Rating: 7

2. Xavier Coates

Scored his first try for the green and gold and solid under the pressure of Katoa's high kicking game.

Rating: 6.5

3. Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow

Justified his selection, scoring Australia's first try and setting up the second, constantly troubling the defence with his blinding pace.

Rating: 7.5

4. Tom Trbojevic

Finished a fine season on a high note, scoring two tries and having two narrowly disallowed.

Rating: 8.5

5. Zac Lomax

Always a danger with his size and speed on the right wing but needs to work on his goalkicking over the summer.

Rating: 7

6. Tom Dearden

A standout in the final and clear man of the match, breaking the Tongan line time and again and setting up his speed men for tries.

7. Mitchell Moses

With Dearden so dominant, he was strangely quiet on his home ground in attack.

8. Patrick Carrigan

Whole-hearted in all facets of the game in the middle for the Kangaroos, never far from the ball.

9. Harry Grant

Clever out of dummy-half, he put the Kangaroos on the front foot all afternoon.

10. Lindsay Collins

Worked hard up the middle before copping a nasty accidental headbutt from Roosters team-mate Crichton.

Worried the Tongans with his trademark offloads, keeping the play alive at vital stages.

Made the most of his elevation into the starting side, fighting the Tongans' fire with his own aggressive game.

Without doubt the most composed captain in the game, keeping the Kangaroos cool and focused when the pressure was on.

Only got eight minutes of game time, replacing skipper Yeo and having little impact.

Solid without doing anything spectacular when he got his chance off the bench.

A little down on his usual energy in attack but did plenty of the spadework in defence.

Have to feel sorry for the kid - barely got onto the field but he did finish with a Cup winners medal.

Tonga

1. Lehi Hopoate

A fine performance by this promising youngster, shining under massive pressure in defence and coming up with a try assist.

Rating: 7.5

2. Daniel Tupou

Got few chances in attack but shut down several dangerous Aussie attacking raids with his experience and defence.

Rating: 6

18. Tolutau Koula

Presented the Kangaroos with plenty of worries with his wide running, gaining over 160 metres.

Rating: 7.5

4. Paul Alamoti

Was having a good game defensively before tragedy struck early in the second half with a dislocated elbow.

Rating: 5

5. Sione Katoa

Scored one of his trademark diving tries but struggled when his opposite Xavier Coates was on the fly.

6. Tuimoala Lolohea

Fairly quiet but came up with a big play with a smart grubber kick for Olakau'atu's try midway through the second half.

7. Isaiya Katoa

Kicked the ball with precision but his running game went missing on the big day.

Led from the front in the opening exchanges, doing the hard yards to rack up over 220 metres.

Didn't present any threat out of dummy-half and the Tongans looked better when Luke went to hooker.

A bit down on his Dolphins form, making little impact with the football.

11. Haumole Olakau'atu

Ran the ball strongly and struck a vital blow with a try from a grubber to give the Tongans hope midway through the second half.

The pick of the Tongan pack, scoring one try and nearly grabbing another when he dropped the ball as he attempted to ground it.

13. Jason Taumalolo

The Tongans' most experienced forward did plenty of hard work, keeping his team in the battle of the big men.

14. Soni Luke

Added some much-needed spark to the dummy-half role when he got his chance off the bench.

Poor off the bench, making just five runs for 27 metres, giving little to lift the team.

Enthusiastic when given his chance, hitting the line hard and defending strongly.

Ran with his Souths-style power but couldn't break the well-disciplined green and gold line.
