NSW Blues coach Brad Fittler has urged the Cronulla Sharks to pull up their socks and follow the lead of captain Wade Graham after a disappointing loss to the Wests Tigers last week.

The Sharks have had their work cut out for them this season thanks to the loss of a number of key players, and the latest steroids scandal surrounding one of their brightest talents Bronson Xerri.

It was always going to be a tall order getting back to the field amid the drama weighing over their heads, but a dismal 28-18 loss at the hands of the Tigers had Fittler issuing the Cronulla forward pack a wake-up call.

"The thing I thought about Cronulla was, they just look like they hadn't grown up," he said.

"A few of those errors in the middle, front-rowers dropping the ball looking for a penalty.

"If it wasn't for Wade Graham I reckon it would have been 40 against Tigers."

The Sharks will travel north to face North Queensland Cowboys on Saturday night, and despite the loss of club talisman Jason Taumalolo through injury, Eighth Immortal Andrew Johns backed the home side to send Cronulla packing.

"It's a big out (Taumalolo), but on paper the Cowboys have still got a very strong team," Johns said.

"Val Holmes, he was sensational last week. Playing against his old club so that will be interesting."
