NRL widely praised for the selection of unprecedented five new Immortals

The NRL broke new ground by announcing a whopping five new Immortals in a grand ceremony on Wednesday night, with the class headlined by three pre-war Immortals.

NRL boss Todd Greenberg immortalised the achievements of Dally Messenger, Dave Brown and Frank Burge, before announcing post-war greats Norm Provan and Mal Meninga as the 12th and 13th Immortals, respectively.

Despite the move to announce five new Immortals coming as a shock, the league has been praised by fans on social media for recognising the pre-war legends of the game.

The league's move to induct five new Immortals was a major surprise with only two new Immortals expected prior to the announcement. 

The five inductees is now a record for the most at one time, surpassing the four inductees from the start of the Immortals announcements back in 1981.
