‘Mad Mondays are dead’: Paul Gallen fumes over Canterbury Bulldogs' big day out

“Mad Mondays are dead.”

That’s the sentiment of incensed Cronulla Sharks captain Paul Gallen after the Canterbury Bulldogs were hit with a $250k fine for their behaviour in this year’s end of season celebrations.

The Bulldogs found themselves in hot water after photos surfaced of some of their players exposing themselves and acting indecently at the Harbour View Hotel in Sydney on Monday evening.

Gallen stopped short of condoning the drunken antics that can arise with the yearly Mad Monday celebration but argued media outlets were to blame for setting up players, and the league, for controversy.

“I’m not trying to stick up for them being naked in a public place, but there are other media outlets who promote the nudie run all season long,” Gallen said on Nine’s Sports Sunday.

“All of the sudden these guys do it at Mad Monday on the drink and get absolutely hammered for it.

“Nobody from the public has complained, there’s been no videos via public – it’s been this one photographer who has got these photos.

 “The police charges came off the back of this photographer selling the photos, then the police have gone to the pub to check the vision then the charges have been laid.

“If the photographer wasn’t there none of this happens.”

The incident overshadowed the first week of the 2018 NRL Finals Series, drawing the ire of a furious Todd Greenberg who threw the book at the Bulldogs for the drunken display.

The fallout was the nail in the coffin for Gallen who believes in the wake of yet another media storm Mad Monday seems all but over.

“Mad Mondays after this I think are dead, I think they’re gone

“I’ve seen it all before, I’m not going to sit here and say it should or shouldn’t happen beaus it does happen

“And maybe it should be in a private place I agree.”

“But I think they’re dead.”
