Kevin Walters sheds light on 'four-way' jostle for coveted No.6 jersey

The Broncos are yet to get any closer to clarity on who will partner Adam Reynolds in their halves combination this year, with coach Kevin Walters saying that there are still four candidates for the job.

Albert Kelly has been named as the halfback with Billy Walters at five-eighth for this weekend's trial match against the Gold Coast Titans. Reynolds has been rested.

"They've both got an opportunity for this weekend... it's a three or four-way jostle for that No.6 jumper," Walters said on Triple M.

He named Ezra Mam and Tyson Gamble as the other possible candidates.

While new recruit and captain Reynolds will be rested, their other big off-season signing, Kurt Capewell, will start in the backrow, with fellow newcomers Brenko Lee and Ryan James also in the team.

Apart from the skipper, it's close to a full-strength line-up for the match against their local rivals.

"Even though it's a trial game this weekend we're certainly not treating it as that," Walters said.

The Broncos are in the midst of their worst spell since inception, collecting a wooden spoon in 2020 and missing the finals last year - but that hasn't stopped the coach from dreaming big.

"Every year when you're a Broncos player, regardless, and the club - we're shooting much higher than the top four," he said.

"We want to win premierships here, that's what the Broncos are about.

"I've always been told as a young person, as an athlete to shoot high, shoot as high as you can. For us, and for mine, I think every club lines up at the start of the year and they want to be there on grand final day, and on the dais with the trophy."
