Karmichael Hunt to make return to Brisbane Broncos

Twelve years after playing his last game for the Broncos Karmichael Hunt is heading back to Red Hill.

Nine News understands the 2006 NRL premiership-winner will join the Brisbane squad on Monday on a train and trial contract.

Club officials believe the 34-year-old can add much-needed experience by playing five-eighth in the young Broncos squad, which has only registered one win in the opening five rounds of the season.

The code-hopper, who has also played AFL for the Gold Coast Suns and rugby union for the Wallabies only returned to rugby league this year – making a comeback in the Intrust Super Cup in Queensland.

Hunt's appearances for the Souths Logan Magpies in 2021 have seen him play alongside Broncos squad members Tom Dearden, Corey Oates and Cory Paix.

Members of the Broncos coaching staff are impressed by the level of leadership and fitness the former State of Origin star has shown in his return, teaming up with Dearden to lead the Magpies to a 36-20 victory over defending Queensland Cup champions Burleigh.

Brisbane coach Kevin Walters ruled out making a play for Hunt just two weeks ago, but has changed his mind with the club's highest-paid player Anthony Milford in the midst of a form slump.

NRL legend Andrew Johns has also lobbied for Brisbane to recruit the veteran of 11 appearances for the Kangaroos.
