It's taken 112 years, but rugby league's oldest club, Newtown, has appointed its first female life member.

Olga Lauricella, a stalwart of the club for many years, was presented with the honour at the club's season launch last week.

In another breakthrough for women in league, she was recognised for her tireless work as the club's administrative and operational executive.

Making the event more special for Olga was the fact that her father, 94-year-old Joseph Lauricella, was on hand to witness her receive her award.

The Jets no longer play in the top tier but have a team in the Canterbury Cup as well as several other junior league competitions.
