'Disappointed' club confirms Tevita Pangai Jr contract backflip months after signing deal

Tevita Pangai Jr has reneged on his deal to play for the Warrington Wolves in 2026, after signing a one-year deal in July.

Following his first season in the Super League playing for the Catalans Dragons, Pangai Jr expressed optimism about teaming up with Sam Burgess at the Wolves, but the club confirmed the former NRL star had backflipped on the deal.

"Tevita Pangai Jr has recently informed the club of his decision not to join for the 2026 season," Warrington said in a statement.

"While we are disappointed, the club accepts his decision, as we remain committed to building a squad of players who are fully invested in the club and its ambitions. We wish Tevita the very best in his future endeavours."

The Wolves would have been Pangai Jr's fourth club in as many years after stints with Canterbury, the Dolphins and Catalans.

Pangai Jr was on the verge of signing with the ACT Brumbies but talks broke down, which opened the door for Wolves to make an offer.

In July, the 29-year-old said Burgess was a "big reason" why he opted to sign with the Wolves, saying he is "very inspiring as a player and coach."

While playing for Catalans earlier this year, Pangai Jr was fined for making obscene hand gestures to Warrington fans after his side's 18-12 loss.

Pangai Junior played 147 NRL games for the Broncos, Panthers, Bulldogs and Dolphins. He also played a State of Origin match for NSW and six Tests for Tonga.
