Reuben Cotter looks set to be sidelined until the State of Origin opener, with the tough Cowboys forward charged by the match review committee.

Early in his side's nail-biting 30-26 loss against the Warriors at Magic Round, the 26-year-old collected rival Marata Niukore with what looked to be an innocuous shot.

Cotter wasn't penalised at the time, with the Warriors scoring immediately after the tackle through halfback Luke Metcalf, but the Cowboys star was placed on report.

However, on Sunday morning, the Maroons star was hit with a grade two careless high tackle charge, and is facing a two-game suspension.

Should he fight the charge and lose at the judiciary, Cotter would miss three games, ruling him out of the first match against NSW on May 28.

The lock forward will miss North Queensland's next two matches with an early plea.

The only other incident reported from Saturday's fixtures at Suncorp Stadium saw Rabbitohs front-rower Tevita Tatola hit with a grade one careless high tackle charge.

Tatola will be fined $1000 with an early guilty plea.
