Jye Gray's long-term Rabbitohs extension creates fresh dilemma for Wayne Bennett as roster squeeze takes hold

Jye Gray has officially turned his back on rival NRL clubs and R360 to re-sign with the Rabbitohs on a fresh long-term contract.

The 21-year-old enjoyed a breakout season in the cardinal and myrtle, cleaning up at the club's year-end awards and proving to be a first grade-calibre fullback.

Gray was in the sights of the rebel rugby union competition, where he was linked with a move worth an estimated $920,000 per season.

But in a show of faith, Gray has opted to remain at Redfern until the end of 2029.

"I'm really grateful to Souths for giving me the opportunity to stay at this great club," he said in a statement on Monday afternoon.

"I'm determined to repay the faith they have shown in me by putting my best foot forward over the next few years to help us achieve our goals.

"I love playing for this club and its members, and I can't wait to get back out onto the field in the red and green."

Rabbitohs head of football Mark Ellison lauded the youngster for his work on and off the field since arriving at the club from Queensland a few years ago.

"Jye was the best player in the NRL competition for the first half of last season and his performances all year for us were outstanding," he said.

"His performances were so good that he attracted interest in his services elsewhere, however, he sees his future is at the South Sydney Rabbitohs, and that is something very exciting for everyone associated with the club.

"He is safe under the high ball, he returns the ball with great speed, his footwork is mesmerising, and his defence is inspiring. He is a great character around the team, he is a player that his teammates love to play with, and his coaches love to coach.

"We could not be happier to have Jye extending with us and we are all looking forward to continuing our work with him as his performances continue to inspire everyone."

While it's a tremendous coup for South Sydney, the new contract for Gray does pose some massive question marks over the make-up of the side.

Gray will now almost certainly wear the No.1 jersey moving forward for the Bunnies, which would see Latrell Mitchell make a permanent move to the centres.

The 28-year-old is undoubtedly one of the best centres of the modern era, so to be able to fit both he and Gray into the same backline is a bonus for Souths.

However, it will leave Wayne Bennett with some big calls to make.

The other centre spot would either be taken by Campbell Graham - who played for Australia in the last World Cup before going through a wretched run of injury - or Jack Wighton, who still has two years to run on his back-ended deal.

Wighton was initially seen as a potential successor to Cody Walker in the five-eighth role, but the classy veteran has re-signed for 2026.

Walker was on $650,000 this season and while he may have taken a bit of a pay cut, it's hard to fathom him being on any less than $500,000 for what could be his last year.

Graham is on $700,000 at the Bunnies, while Wighton is on an estimated salary between $850,000 and $900,000 for the next two seasons.

The options for Bennett would either be playing Wighton at centre and shift Graham out to the wing, or put Walker to halfback and slot Wighton into the No.6 jersey.

Either way, it would see Souths trot out a centre pairing worth up to $2 million given the fact Latrell is raking in $1.1 million for at least the next two years.

Those four men aren't the only players at the club on sizeable pay packets eithers.

Cameron Murray - the skipper who missed almost the entire season with an Achilles injury - is on $1.1 million as well, which is more than fair given his standing in the game.

Jai Arrow, Brandon Smith and Tevita Tatola are all on big contracts too, while the recent addition of David Fifita wouldn't have been overly cheap either.

Keaon Koloamatangi is already on an estimated $700,000 salary and after his recent debut for the Kangaroos and his public call to test the open market, would need a fair upgrade if he was to remain in the red and green beyond his current deal.

This season, South Sydney had more players on the top-100 highest-paid list than any other club and that figure is unlikely to shrink any time soon.

The roster is absolutely stacked with top-end talent, but as has become bleedingly obvious over the past couple of years, the depth at the Rabbitohs is not quite there.

Gray's new contract, which would no doubt come with an upgrade, will only make that top-heavy salary cap a bigger issue for the club to contend with.
