Bulldogs boss Phil Gould addresses investigation into Josh Addo-Carr over roadside drug test

Bulldogs general manager Phil Gould has addressed the situation around Josh Addo-Carr with the club investigating an alleged roadside drug test.

The club were made aware of the incident over the weekend, with Gould originally denying rumours that the star winger returned a positive test result.

"On Friday evening Josh was pulled over and subjected to a random roadside drug test," he said via social media platform X.

"The test results were negative and Josh was allowed to continue on his way. Happens to all of us at some stage on the roads. It's the police keeping the community safe.

"We appreciate their work. There is absolutely no truth to rumours that Josh had any issue. None whatsoever."

Hours after Gould's statement, 9News Sydney reporter Danny Weidler took to social media to reveal the club were now looking into the matter.

"The Bulldogs are now looking into the Josh Addo-Carr alleged roadside drug test positive," he said via X.

"The initial information the club was given doesn't marry up with the police allegations.

"That is a significant issue."

NSW Police have confirmed the sample has been sent for analysis and at this stage, Addo-Carr has not been charged.

"About 10.45pm on Friday, officers attached to Auburn Police Area Command were patrolling Baywater Drive, Wentworth Point, when they stopped a Toyota hatchback for random testing," a statement said.

"The driver - a 29-year-old man - was subject to roadside testing which allegedly returned a positive indication for cocaine. The sample has been sent for analysis."

Speaking on Nine's 100% Footy, Gould revealed the winger had been watching the Roosters vs South Sydney match before going for a drive when he was pulled over by police.

"He came in and reported it to us the next morning, but the way it was reported to us on Saturday morning was very dismissive of it, that there was no drama and he hadn't tested positive to anything, they (police) allowed him to drive home and sent him on his way," he said.

"I'd kind of forgotten about it until he (Addo-Carr) rang me this morning and said there was some phone calls from players at other clubs and his wife had got some phone calls that this was bubbling around. I spoke to our chairman and said I spoke to Josh about this on the weekend twice and his description of events is we've got nothing to worry about and he's got nothing to worry about.

"... As it turns out from this afternoon, there is now conflicting reports from the police and how they've described the events of the afternoon which has led me to sit down with Josh Addo-Carr and his manager face-to-face at five o'clock this afternoon to go through exactly how things unfolded."

Gould added the second drug test will provide further clarity and wasn't confirming or denying whether Addo-Carr had a future at the club, stating there's a "long way to go to get to that point".

The Bulldogs boss also admitted to being confused by how it's played out, with his reason for meeting Addo-Carr and his manager to do with the conflicting reports, having spoken to the police himself.

"I'm still a little bit confused at some of the events as they've been portrayed by the police and Josh Addo-Carr," he said.

Gould said Addo-Carr vehemently denies he's taken anything that would result in a positive test.

The Bulldogs boss added he doesn't believe the winger deliberately misled the club.

"I think his interpretation of events was his own interpretation and inaccurate but it's probably led to now where it's hard to trust anything about that ... it'll all come out with the police," he said.

Addo-Carr missed the side's round 27 clash with the Cowboys but was expected to suit up for the Bulldogs in the finals series.

The 29-year-old has been told not to attend Canterbury's end-of-year awards night on Monday, according to a report from The Sydney Morning Herald.
