Buckle up - the saga surrounding Ben Hunt's contract could get messy soon.

A fresh report from The Sydney Morning Herald has revealed that the Dragons captain was dealt some harsh truths in the club's end-of-season review.

Hunt was one of several St George Illawarra players called out for their form in the final month of the season, which saw the side miss out on a top-eight spot.

According to The Herald, the 34-year-old was called out for his performances in regards to his defence, kicking and leadership when the finals were on the line.

Hunt met with head coach Shane Flanagan, as well as assistant Dean Young, for the review on Thursday morning but at this stage, has not requested a release.

The veteran halfback had some fantastic performances throughout the season and registered a league-high 30 try assists, but struggled amid the Red V's capitulation.

Hunt also made 43 errors this year - the second most in the competition behind teammate Zac Lomax, who will head to Parramatta next season.

The skipper was in the midst of contract negotiations earlier this year and looked destined to extend his stay beyond next year, but that offer is no longer on the table.

The likes of Andrew Johns and Brad Fittler have both questioned Hunt's future in the red and white, with a potential return to Queensland looking more likely by the day.

Flanagan is now expected to turn his attention to attracting a quality playmaker for the 2026 season and beyond.
