Sam Burgess denies Russell Crowe landed the finishing blow at Rabbitohs

South Sydney legend Sam Burgess has shed light on what occurred behind closed doors before he sensationally departed as assistant coach of the Rabbitohs.

Burgess allegedly parted ways with the club last month to focus on the birth of his child and his obligations as the incoming head coach of Warrington in the Super League.

However, reports also claimed Burgess and fellow assistant John Morris had raised concerns to coach Jason Demetriou about perceived double standards in the treatment of players Latrell Mitchell and Cody Walker.

Speaking on Fox Sports' The Matty Johns Show on Sunday night, Burgess addressed why he chose to walk away.

"I don't really want to go back into the detail of it all," he said.

"I went in that morning to do the best thing for the club and the team in that moment.

"I thought being there and the distraction that was around, I made what I thought the best decision was for the team at that time to get away from there.

"A few things had gone on behind closed doors so I thought it's just best to leave it there and move on."

Burgess' exit sparked rumours that Hollywood star and club co-owner Russell Crowe had decided his fate.

The Sydney Morning Herald reported that the Rabbitohs board deferred their decision on Burgess' and Morris' futures during a board meeting in August until they were able to consult Crowe the next morning.

In a foxsports.com.au column it was claimed Crowe, Burgess and a Rabbitohs board member had been involved in an intense phone call.

Crowe is known to have a close bond with Burgess, having been the one to convince the Englishman to join South Sydney.

Asked if his long-standing relationship with Crowe had been soured in the process, Burgess denied any suggestions of ill feelings.

"That's bullshit, yeah it's bullshit," he said.

"I'll clear this up. It's bullshit because there was no hang-up whatsoever. We had a good conversation and he said, 'All right mate we'll see you later'.

"I don't know where it's come from. Somebody has to hang up.

"There was no animosity whatsoever, I was supposed to be up at his farm this week, but (we are) expecting the baby and all that."
