Matt Lodge has taken up a new code, at least for now, after he was released from the final year and half of his NRL contract with the Warriors.

Despite being under contract until the end of the season, with a player option in his favour for the following year, Lodge and the Warriors agreed to an immediate release last week.

The club said Lodge's sudden exit was due to the prop's unwillingness to commit to living in New Zealand long-term.

Lodge is currently playing second-grade rugby for Norths in Brisbane.

According to 9News Queensland, Lodge is playing to keep fit ahead of his next NRL move, and in doing so, has paid his own registration fees.

Lodge this week can play first-grade rugby for the club if he chooses to do so, according to 9News.

He has sent the NRL rumour mill into overdrive after purchasing a house on Sydney's northern beaches - the home of the Sea Eagles.
